Why is 2020 the best year to be a litigator in Australia?

There has never been a better time to be a Litigator in Australia than 2020.

The market demand for lawyers with litigious experience has grown exponentially over the past 12 months and hiring has remained constant. This is a trend we expect to continue all year, with a number of firms establishing on-going recruitment drives for their disputes teams.

The increased need for quality litigators stems from the increase in regulation in Australia. The impact of increased regulation has led to extreme demand for legal services, mainly from the large banks. Candidates with financial services regulatory and disputes experience have become invaluable across the Top-Tier market, with firms reporting a pipeline of work which will last for numerous years.

What does it mean for your job search?

You should have options and be able to command a great salary.

Due to the nature of the market, a number of our candidates have been fielding multiple job offers simultaneously. Not only does this provide options for candidates, this regularly leads to a ‘price war’ between firms, which helps to achieve attractive remuneration offers. Litigation has also been a main area where we have seen firms offer sign-on bonuses to help persuade candidates to accept their position.

The elevated level of hiring has opened the door for candidates who may not have been in contention for highly sought-after opportunities in the past, with firms willing to be more open-minded with where they hire lawyers from. This provides a great climate for Mid-Tier lawyers who want to make a step-up to a Top-Tier firm.
