Beacon Legal is working with an international property development company looking to hire a Legal Counsel to work out of the company’s Sydney CBD office.
The Company
Our client is an international property development company operating across the Asia Pacific region. It has significant financial backing and is a rapidly growing business, offering plenty of opportunity for its employees to progress within the organisation.
The company’s legal team is a close-knit unit of high calibre lawyers, all of whom have transitioned from reputable national and international firms. You will be reporting into a General Counsel but working closely with a Senior Legal Counsel, who will act as a mentor.
The Role
A Legal Counsel position has become avaiable for an experienced property lawyer looking to transition into an in-house role. The role has a specific property focus and would suit a property lawyer looking to utilise their skills in a more commercial capacity.
As a Legal Counsel, you’ll have the opportunity to tailor your legal advice to suit the needs of the business, meaning you’ll need to think about legal issues in a more commercial way. You also won’t need to worry about billable targets and timesheets – your work will be assessed in terms of quality and overall commercial value.
Your day-to-day tasks will include:

  • Reviewing, drafting and negotiating a range of commercial contracts (most with a property focus), including leases, construction contracts and joint venture agreements;
  • Managing external law firms (many of whom are international) on any matter relevant to the business, and ensuring firms operate within appropriate financial parameters;
  • Providing comapny secretarial and general commercial advice to the business as required;
  • Managing key internal stakeholders in terms of project delivery and timelines on advice;
  • Providing legal training to the business where necessary.

About You

  • Admitted as a solicitor in Australia;
  • At least 4 PQE gained from a reputable private practice firm’s property team or in a similar in-house role. A combination of law firm and commercial in-house experience will be highly advantageous;
  • Strong communication skills – you should be able to communicate effectively with team members and key internal stakeholders, by engaging in open dialogue and deciphering complex legal issues in a commercially understandable way;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • You should love a challenge and enjoy working in a fast-paced, collaborative, collegiate and enjoyable team environment.
